Rethymno's convenient aspect is that it is nearly equidistant from both main airports, Chania and Heraklion - meaning many more flight options (you can fly into either airport, whichever suits you).

In October time there are still charter direct flights from most big European cities to Chania or Heraklion. They are very convenient!

By car, we strongly recommend approaching Rethymno along the coast taking the western-most exit from the New National Road at Rethymno - this gets you directly to the port and the old town.  

Parking in town: There are many parking places, although many streets in the old town are kept for pedestrians.
